 | | | | Part P Part P is here. As from 1st January 2005, if your job involves fitting electrical accessories and wiring in a domestic situation then you are affected. Generally speaking, electrical work needs to be inspected to confirm that is it fitted in accordance to the relavent regulations. Part P is a self certificate scheme to allow you to inspect and certificate your own work. There are various schemes to register with to become complient. Alternativley, you can rely on building control, who, for a fee, will inspect you work.
To help contractors understand Part P of the Building Regulations, the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) has published a new guidance booklet. These are free of charge from the ECA Technical department on 020 7313 4800 or can be downloaded from their website at www.eca.co.uk or from the Part P website at www.partp.co.uk (There will be other guides available, but this is one we are aware of.)
As an "end user", you can still purchase your electrical goods and have a qualified electrician fit them. Under the new law, homeowners are still able to replace accessories such as light switches and sockets on an exisiting circuit, although there are exceptions such as kitchens and bathrooms.
